Overview

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Office of the Chief Learning Officer’s (OCLO) Warning Decision Training Division (WDTD) develops and delivers training and education on the integrated elements of the warning process involving a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/NWS forecast office and its partners. WDTD uses the latest technology available including GOES (Weather Satellite) and Polar satellite data, Dual-Pol Doppler radar and short-range numerical models to develop training and simulations which replicate the warning environment at local offices.

Responsibilities

Maintains data files and control procedures for a simple system of networked personal computers or for a group of desktop computers linked to a host server. Responsible for system security and data integrity. Assigns passwords and monitors use of resources. Back up files as required. May produce periodic business reports, generate output such as labels, letters, and forms, and respond to frequent management request for information. May require extensive knowledge of software such as Microsoft Office and similar suites of business applications. May be a resident expert for applications running on a department-wide LAN or for the entire computer system in a smaller enterprise.

 

  • Perform or assist with duties required for operating the computing facilities.
  • Adhere to SPC Change Management policies and procedures
  • Follow government guidelines, policies, and procedures to provide, or assist in the provision of, systems security and the development of procedures for the use and maintenance of all computers, peripherals, and software in use at SPC
  • Provide support for the installation and relocation of microcomputer and LAN equipment, in coordination with the University of Oklahoma (NWC building owners).
  • Maintain a database for all software and hardware, scan all new software received for viruses, and duplicate the new software for off-site archive and working copies.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and answer user questions on 3rd party or "free" software obtained via the Internet.
  • Install and configure Desktop and Laptop computers and Server hardware. This includes the installation of adapters and devices, peripherals, scanners, sound, video, printers, and other peripherals. Manage and optimize Desktop systems so users can realize the full potential of the desktop device
  • Provide software training for Desktop and Laptop computer users. Conduct tutorial sessions on basic Local Area Network (LAN) usage, prepare user's tutorials on the LAN and client-based software packages, and coordinate software training for SPC personnel with off-site vendors.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on workstations, servers, printers and other peripherals as required to ensure maximum operability and uptime.
  • Provide system management for all computers and other hardware. Administer and maintain patches, upgrades, and security settings on all systems.
  • Manage or assist in implementing the government’s directives on reduction of printers and duplicative devices.
  • Diagnose and correct problems with Desktop and Laptop computers and Servers. Perform hardware diagnostics and isolate hardware problems on Desktop and Laptop computers, Servers, and peripherals. Perform the necessary replacement or repair to correct the hardware problems
  • Maintain a Procedures Manual containing the installation and configuration procedures, passwords, backup procedures, and contact information (needed when problems occur) for Desktop and Laptop computers, Server hardware and software.
  • Provide software assistance to resolve problems using the software. Interface with software vendors to solve software problems or provide an acceptable workaround.
  • Manage or assist in the administration of an offsite backup system. Ensure that all Server systems are backed up on a daily/weekly basis (according to the latest policy for backing up systems), add/delete systems to be backed up, upgrade the backup software clients, and assist Users with problems and recovery of files from backup when necessary. Provide users with options for backing up Desktop and Laptop computers.
  • Assist in the evaluation and procurement of new hardware and software by reviewing requirements and specifications to insure appropriate hardware acquisition consistent with SPC, NWS, and NOAA IT Architecture, best practices and scientific requirements. Provide technical interface with the vendors as needed during the procurement process.
  • Assist with system management for Servers and Desktop and Laptop workstations. Manage or assist with backups/restore requests, patches, upgrades, and security settings on all current systems.
  • Assist in fielding user questions regarding problems with Windows/Linux servers, Desktop workstations, and Laptops.
  • Perform or assist in the configuration management, control and accountability of government assets, to include sensitive electronic and IT equipment, within the Sunflower asset management system or similar database driven inventory system.
  • Utilize experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, and perform a variety of complicated tasks including property management.
  • Works closely with Property Accountability Officers and/or Property Custodians and budget officers.
  • Assist with the effective administration and maintenance of a system of control and accountability for personal property.
  • Assist to maintain current custodial records for all accountable personal property.
  • Assist the submission of appropriate reports promptly for lost, missing, stolen, destroyed, damaged or rendered unserviceable accountable personal property.
  • Affix property identification number (bar code) label onto accountable personal property.
  • Assist team with conducting annual inventories and reconciling inventory records.
  • Assist with the employee separation process by ensuring that all assigned property has been accounted for. SPC averages 50-60 Windows users. All are located at the NWC.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a FISMA clearance
  • BS degree in in related field and 2 years of experience
  • 6 years of experience in lieu of a degree
